If you spend a lot of time on the field playing your favorite sport, you are nearly always subject to experience an ankle sprain that can result in some pretty tough pain. One of the more common injuries that most players put up with in this joint is known as an inversion ligament sprain, and this particular injury is the result of the sole of the foot landing the wrong way and being turned inward, allowing the outer ligaments to stretch and tear. A more rare kind of injury to this joint is referred to as an eversion sprain, in which case the sole of the foot will flip up to face outwards and tear the ligaments on the inside; this sometimes results in a fracture, as well.
Of the handful of things that can be damaged in an ankle injury, the two that result in the worst pain are known as the calcaneofibular ligament, which is harder to injure, and the talofibular ligament, which runs between the talus and the smaller of the tow bones in the lower leg. It usually requires a pretty severe injury to affect the calcaneofibular ligament, which is the ligament that attaches your heel to your leg bone.
Of course, the injuries you will experience can go way past just a couple of ligaments, because there are several other bones and tendons in that can be affected, as well as the tissue around this area, which can be severely bruised and swollen. Anyone who experiences an injury to this part of their body and wants to be able to walk normally after it’s all healed up should seek a physician for proper treatment and advice on rehabilitation, no matter how mild or severe the injury.
An ankle sprain might feel like nothing more than a painful misstep in the middle of your big game or marathon run, but if you don’t get the treatment you need, that painful misstep has the potential to take you out of the game for good.
