Needing groin treatment was the least glorious moment of my sports career. There I was, football star, big man on campus, and from one second to the next, I was on the ground, in agony, clutching at my groin. Due to hard work and careful stretching, I’ve never had to experience a hamstring injury. Once when I was a youthful teen, I was examined by a doctor specializing in posture. The doctor then informed me that I had the tightest hamstrings that he had ever witnessed. There wasn’t much I could do about it at the time, although as the years went by, I took up running as a hobby. I participated on the track team as a high school student, but as a university student merely ran on my own each day.

When I began my running hobby, my track coaches always stressed the necessity of proper stretching. This advice ended in my being able to increase the distance I could stretch, a little each day. Suddenly, I was able to achieve something that had forever been beyond me: touch my toes. I took a lot of joy in this feat, since I had never be able to make it happen before.

Sadly, when I finished the track season, I stopped doing the stretches and quickly went back to my old self The flexibility I’d gained from proper hamstring care was completely gone. When I got back into running form for participation in cross country in the fall, I had to carefully re-stretch and work hard in order to avoid injury.

I finally smartened up when I got into college. The absence of a structured running system meant that I had to take matters into my own hands and develop personal running plans. I was able to keep myself from getting a pulled hamstring by not giving up and doing my stretches every time I decided to run. The seasons changed and it grew colder, but still, I did my pre-run exercises, stretching and warming up as much as needed.
