New Grad Nurse Jobs Do Exist

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I can hear it now, individuals looking for new grad nurse jobs are saying “There aren’t any new grad nurse jobs!”, “A sure thing for job security? Then where are all the new grad nurse jobs?!”, “How can I get any experience if no one will hire me?”, “Where are all the new grad nurse jobs I was promised? All positions are for experienced nurses?”, “Nursing shortage? What nursing shortage?”, “Why is it so hard to find a job? I’m a nurse for goodness sakes!”

In some situations these are common complaints heard from people searching for new grad nurse jobs right out of school. In this situation let me give some advice and a dose of encouragement. Take a deep breath, there are new grad nurse jobs out there!

New Grad Nurse Jobs

The job market, in some places, is very tight. While it is disheartening, we need to realize that this isn’t completely new. Nursing, as a profession, has been here before, to a degree. When I first began my career there seemed to be few new grad nurse jobs, nurses were being laid off, allied professions were being cut…this was over 2 decades ago now.

To all nurses both seasoned and new grads, there IS a nurse shortage, we are all just caught up in a strange situation currently. Trust me…there is a nursing shortage! And it is going to get worse.

New Grad Nurse Jobs

The problem seems to be that, like every other business around, hospitals are having to make the same gut-wrenching budget cuts as everyone else. It’s hitting so many areas of nursing right now…students, faculty, schools, hospitals…everyone is affected by the current economic situation. Hospitals, whether they’re short on nurses or not at the moment, are dealing with a cash-crisis and are taking a close look at new grad nurse jobs.

The reality is no matter how great you were in school, or how many extra hours put it, or how long you worked in a hospital as a tech before you went to nursing school, it still takes a good year or so to turn a new grad into a fully independent nurse. This is simply how it is.

New Grad Nurse Jobs

They will spend tens of thousands of dollars on you, above and beyond the salary they pay you, just to get you to the place where you actually “earn” that salary. Don’t get offended by this, your hospital knows that you are a very worthwhile investment. The key is to be open to accepting a job in an area where you hadn’t planned on working. These just aren’t typical times right now, especially for new grad nurse jobs.

You may not believe it right now, but most of the skills of nursing are learned after you get out of school! In school, you are learning the “science” of nursing, the “theory” of nursing. Upon graduation, you will learn how to apply that science and theory in the real world of nursing.

Your clinical rotations were not the real world. Nursing requires judgment skills; judgment skills are the result of experience backed by the theory and science you learned in school. It just takes time.

How Did The Registered Nurse Symbol, Or Caduceus, Come About?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

To nurses, and healthcare professionals in general, the registered nurse symbol stands as a symbol of accomplishment for completing school. It has become known over the last century as representation for healthcare professionals as a whole for the care and dedication put into this profession. In nursing school the registered nurse symbol is symbolic of the caring nature in nursing. One may ask where did the registered nurse symbol come from? Read on to find out.

The registered nurse symbol, originally known as the Caduceus is a staff that was according to legend carried by the roman god messenger Hermes. This staff was topped with a pair of wings and had two winding serpents around it. It was a symbol of fertility, wisdom, and was also a symbol of the sun gods. Carried by Greek heralds and ambassadors, this staff was meant as a symbol of neutrality pertaining to the Romans.

By regulation since 1902 it has been the insignia with the healthcare branch in the U.S. Army. The caduceus is much used like a symbolic representation of commerce, postal service, and ambassadorial positions and since the 16th cent. has largely replaced the one-snake symbolic representation of Asclepius as being a image of medicine.

Some people see the registered nurse symbol or Caduceus as a negative symbol for the profession, but even still, it’s a positive symbol of caring for those of us in the profession. No matter what the registered nurse symbol might seem like to others, to the common public it still remains a image from the nursing and medical fields in general, and consequently stands as a positive symbolic representation for them and a sense of comfort. This goes on to give the public a comforting feeling as they know how it is linked to healthcare in general. We nurses don’t look at it and think of the negative connotations associated with it from ancient mythology, we regard it as being a image of pride.

Many “medical” organisations use a registered nurse symbol of a short rod entwined by two snakes and topped by a pair of wings, which is actually the caduceus or magic wand of the Greek god Hermes (Roman Mercury), messenger of the gods, inventor of (magical) incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves. It is derived from the Greek karykeion = “herald’s staff”, itself based on the word “eruko” meaning restrain, control.

It is interesting to see that most of organisations using this registered nurse symbol are generally either commercial or military (or American). New Zealand examples include drug and pharmaceutical companies. A study confirmed that the connection of the caduceus and medicine was solidified around the 7th century A.D. A study by Friedlander confirms this impression. This was around the time Hermes had come to be associated with the study of alchemy. Alchemists were referred to as the sons of Hermes, as Hermetists or Hermeticists and as “practitioners of the hermetic arts”.

The magic staff of Mercury, otherwise known as Hermes, was the Caduceus. Associated today as the registered nurse symbol. Back in the time of Hermes this symbol was an image for heralds and commerce, not medicine. The other words associated with this symbol were caduity, imply temporality, and senility. While the nursing profession touts vitality, renewal, and health.
