Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, also known as “TMJ” is a disorder that is concentrated on the TM joints, central nervous system and muscular function/mobility. It is essential, to seek out treatments that right away when pain is emerging to miss any further complications like; arthritis, jaw dislocation/lock jaw, and ongoing muscle tension that leads to migraines, aches, and pains that affect the back and neck.
From my own personal experience, I can honestly say that living with this disorder is not an easy task. Not only does your jaw, and overall health deteriorate but so does your relationships around you – that is why it is vital to find a good team of people that you can trust, and that can work with you or something that helped me was some minor lifestyle adjustments that can work for just about anybody.
While going through the motions of life with this disorder, it can lead you into a dark abyss or make you feel as though you are drowning in medical bills or running out of options. I cannot stress how important it is to maintain a positive attitude on life and keep things simplified, organized and orderly. If absolutely necessary, simplify all your ongoing tasks you take upon yourself daily and cut them into smaller simplified tasks. Maintain that ability to make healthier choices in nutrition, fitness, and maintaining a tight or strong circle of friends who only bring out the best in you and help you keep fighting. Therefore, whenever feeling slightly down or anxious think of tasks to ease the ongoing pain or suffering as well as make some lifestyle changes to help control pain. Even while taking nutritional supplements that help with energy and vitality will boost your immune system and help decrease the pain you may be experiencing.
It’s remarkable as to how chiropractors, orthodontists, dentists, “specialists”, profit off of treatments for nerves, jaw pain, adjustments, splints, appliances, as well as other methods or forms of treatments; ie. mouth guards, acupuncture, spinal decompression, etc. It is unbelievable the number of times I ended up in the emergency room…very nerve racking. Felt as though, no one could understand my pain and mood except for those close around me that truly love and care. Professionals were not taking my symptoms seriously and making me feel as though it was asymptomatic.
You see, I have absolutely no regrets and believe that it is essential for people to speak out and communicate their symptoms in a way that they are taken seriously and the doctor’s understand the pain that they are in or try to be somewhat empathetic. Do not be afraid to speak out and voice your opinion as to what you are experiencing exactly so that there is an understanding and no apathy but empathy. People are ignorant if they are not knowledgeable on the subject and uneducated. In my findings and ongoing research, I noticed most doctors, had very little knowledge and only tried curing the symptom but not the root cause of the problem that was being experienced. I was on one drug prescription after another and it seemed like an ongoing cycle that really felt as though nothing was being resolved and my goals of finding a cure were further out of reach – it seemed impossible. Finally, with raising awareness and really putting myself out there, I took my health into my own hands and fought. My friend once said “Well, what if things don’t necessarily get better for you, then what?” I really thought long and hard about that one for it was very thought provoking.
It was frustrating to have had experienced misdiagnosis’ by specialists and physiotherapists who had very little knowledge on the subject of TMJ. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and even was told that I very well may have Multiple Sclerosis due to my symptoms. It is a shame that in today’s society and with today’s technology that certain “specialists” / doctor’s have the nerve to just write out prescription medication, offer surgery without giving you other options.
After doing a ton of research on a daily basis, and learning something from each encounter, I have found a solution…
