What Are Search Engines And How Do They Work?

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

If you are asking this question, you are not alone. Many small business owners and people who are self employed understand they need a website,

But don’t have a clue how to make visitors come to it. The truth is, understanding websites is pretty simple; bringing tons of visitors is another topic altogether though.

Let’s start with how search engines work to index your website and what is so vital about them.
What are Search Engines? -Search engines are like phone books for the internet. In the same way you look to the phone book to find a local business, a search engine allows you to look for online businesses.

You simply type in the word or words that represent what you are searching for and you get a list of possible sites. The search engines use what they call “spiders” to crawl the internet and index websites by term. For example, a spider from a search engine would crawl through your site and see the word shoes.
If “Shoes” is the most used word on your web page, you’ll get indexed for shoes, along with every other site using that word. However, if your site uses the term “Shoes Boston,” you would be indexed for that term. For this reason, you need to include words relevant to what you are selling or offering.
Why are Search Engines Important? -The majority of people use search engines to find what they are looking for.

No matter how much you advertise your website and url, the fact is very few people will remember it. Most people simply search by the name of your company or the industry it is a part of.

However, all search engines only lists ten search results on each page. Statistics show that very few people go past page two of the search results. Therefore, if you are on page nine or you are listing 150,000 out of one million, you may never get seen.
How Do You Get On Page One Or Two Of Popular Search Engines? -Having your site displayed on page or two of the most popular search engine results is not easy. There are a number of things to consider such as keywords, meta tags, headers, and even the website name you choose.

You also have to know which sites to link to and which to stay away from. It is not an easy process, but with a little time and determination, you can get your site up there. The process is called SEO or search engine optimization. If you do a search for either term you will quickly see that it is the foundation on which search engines work. There are companies that do nothing but optimize websites each day.

There are also sites that sell links to promote your website. Some of these sites are great; they help you get on page one and develop a good website. However, some companies use techniques that are not so prudent and can not only keep you off page one, but they can also get you banned from the search engines all together.
What Should You Avoid? -Avoid using companies that stuff your pages full of keywords or link you to hundreds of sites in one day!

These techniques are not useful and the major search engines will quickly catch on. You need to use techniques that build your site up in a natural order that would occur without these companies.

You should slowly add links, use lots of new relevant content, and grow your site over time. Do not try to force the process or use bad techniques. Do things correctly and you will quickly be on page one of the search results.

What is Search Engine Optimization or SEO?

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

In today’s day in age everyone knows what a search engine in is. However, most people do not understand how search engines work.

It really isn’t as difficult as most people think. Search engines are basically like phone books for the Internet. They look through websites and decide which pages are relevant for the keywords searchers enter into the search engine.

For example, when you enter the word cars the search engines will display a list of sites that deal with cars.

How Do Search Engines Decide Relevance? -Search engines use specific algorithms to decide which websites are relevant for specific keywords. They use programs to crawl through each site and decide what the website is about.

These programs look at a number of things to determine what the site pertains to. It looks at the name of the website as well as the text on the page.

There are also a number of items such as Meta tags and website names that are considered by these algorithms. It seems very complicated, however, if you understand what the search engines are looking for, you can quickly optimize your website.

On Page Optimization -On page optimization is the process of optimizing the web page that the visitor sees. You would optimize things such as text on the page, headers, and page titles.

This means you would need to include the keywords you will be using for your website in these areas. Most SEO experts agree that using keywords 4% of the time is exactly what is needed for search engine optimization.

This means that if you have a web page with 500 words you should include your keywords at least 20 times. However, don’t go overboard using keywords too many times can actually cost you credibility with the search engines. This is considered as page stuffing. It is frowned upon and considered a bad tactic to take.

Off Page Optimization -Off page optimization is the process of optimizing things your customers won’t see. Off page optimization includes your link building campaign and use of social networking.

These items are kind of like advertising on the Internet. Your goal should be to get a link on as many websites as possible. However, this isn’t as easy as it sounds. Most people only want to link to websites that have excellent content. Therefore, you need to make sure your page has something other people want to talk about.

This can be the latest fashions, news, or simply information others might find helpful. Whatever the case your website pass to provide something for your visitors, and other peoples visitors, before you will get links. You do have the option of using social networking sites to build up hype about what you have to offer. In this regard you get to control what is said.

SEO is an Ongoing Process! -The thing you need to consider is that SEO is an ongoing process. You cannot simply post a few pages, obtain a few links, and brag on a few social sites, then expect to be the number one site in the search engines. Anything you can do someone else can do as well.

For this reason your SEO campaign should be ongoing and be continually updated with new techniques a new strategies. Search engines are constantly evolving and changing the practices they will allow and will not allow. In the same manner websites are always changing as well. Sites you link to today can go bad, very quickly, tomorrow.

For these reasons you need to constantly monitor your search engine standings and make changes as they are needed. Do not simply sit back and think you have finished the job, things you do today to raise your results could be ineffective tomorrow. The truth is SEO is an ongoing battle and as long as there are web masters who try unethical techniques the changes will be ongoing.

How Search Engines And Directories Work

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Anyone who accesses the Internet in search of information will inevitably head straight for a search engine or a directory.

Most people hold the impression that they are one and the same, but there are some fundamental differences between search engines and directories.

This article will explore in detail the differences between search engines and directories.

About Internet Search Engines -A web search engine is essentially a website that allows you to input a word or phrase related to whatever you are searching for.

A series of relevant results will then be produced, containing links to websites that might contain what you are looking for. Some of the popular search engines include Google, Yahoo and Nexplore.

The main page of most popular search engines is exceedingly simple, containing a single entry field where you can input your query, then click a search button, whereupon most major search engines will search its database for sites matching your entry.

A results page will appear with the top 10 website results for your query, with options to link to the following pages of results as well.

Web search engines make use of various factors when ranking sites, such as the number of times a relevant word or phrase is used in the text on the site, how many other sites are linked to it, the number of times keywords can be found in the site’s code, many others.

Most of the top search engines operate in much the same way as each other, although they may use slightly different criteria in ranking websites.

True search engines work by first using a program known as a crawler or spider. This program trawls the Internet, following links and indexing the websites they find in a database.

Once a spider program has indexed a website, the search engine will revisit the site regularly in order to keep its records updated. Some search engines may even use spider programs multiple times each day, especially if they think the websites indexed by the engine need to be updated.

You will find that there are many search engines available that specialize in searching for other file types or information types. Some items search engines may specialize in indexing are images, files, music, and many more. Some search engines are also particularly useful for finding specific types of sites such as shopping sites.

About Internet Directories -Directories function very differently from search engines. Directories do not make use of spider or crawler programs. Instead, directories are usually manually maintained by humans.

A directory will usually have an editor who vets submissions to the directory or else it will have someone who actively searches the Internet for sites to add to their listings. Directories may vary in size from the small to the truly massive.

An excellent example of a large directory is Dmoz.org. It is a not-for-profit directory edited completely by volunteers. The Internet also contains countless smaller directories that specialize in a particular niche. No matter what you are looking for on the web, you are bound to find a directory that caters to it.

Comparing Search Engines And Directories -A directory edited by someone will usually contain listings of sites of higher quality since, unlike a search engine; sites added to a directory must undergo a manual inspection and approval process.

A directory also separates its listings according to categories – something search engines do not do. A search engine will contain a great deal more links than a directory, however, and the results you find on a search engine are also likely to be fresher.

Whether you decide to make use of a search engine or a directory really depends on what it is you are searching for and which of them is able to offer you better results to suit your needs.

Top Five Ways To Get Noticed By Search Engines

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

The truth is, the best way to get noticed by search engines is to be better than the competition. However, not everyone knows what they need to be better at.

It all comes down to search engine optimization and there are certain things you need to do. You don’t have to be the best on the internet;

you just have to be better than the people you are competing with on your keywords. Consider the following areas if you want to be number one in the search engine results.

Pick the Right Url -The first step in getting high search engine rankings begins even before you build your website.
You need to pick a site name that has something to do with the products or services you will be offering. For example, if you are selling dog collars,

you may not want your website named Cats_R_Us.com. You should think about the keywords you will want to target, and try to incorporate them into your site name.

Name Your Pages Correctly -When you are building your website, you should include the best page names possible. Don’t use page titles like “home page”, and “about us”.

You should include your keywords in your page titles. For example instead of “Home Page” you could say “Dog Collars Home”, or you could use “About Dog Collars.com”.

Try to use your keywords as much as you can when naming your web pages.

Optimize Your Meta Tags -Meta tags are an important part of getting your site ranked high in the search engines.

Meta keywords and meta phrases are some of the first things that search engine spiders see when crawling your website. These should be optimized to include the keywords or phrases you think best describe your website page.

Each page will have its own metas and they should be optimized for what is on that page. Make sure you keep these up to date as you make changes to pages and discontinue products or services.

Optimize Your On Page Text -If you are writing the text on your page, you should include your keywords as a natural part of the page.

Do not stuff the page with keywords, but make sure they are included. On average, a good number is to include your keywords 4% of the time. This means that a 500 word page would have your keywords listed 20 times.

This should be done naturally, as a part of the headers and the text. The keys should be used in a grammatically correct way and never use improper spelling.

Age of Site -While you can’t make your site older than it really is, this is something to consider. Do not change your website every few months.

Some people do this. They get fed up with a site because it isn’t working and they start something new. The problem is that search engines do look at your websites age as a factor for ranking it.

This doesn’t mean that a new site cannot get high ranks. It just means that in the same way you get higher ranks after months of building links, age will also raise your search engine rankings.

These are just a few of the ways you can build you site to get higher search engine rankings. There are dozens more ways today.

The key is to create a user friendly site that convinces visitors to stay and buy while they are there. After all, it does no good to bring in 20,000 visitors if you can only close two sales

Google Street View Vs. Privacy Lobbyist

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

There is a debate raging between Google over their Street View, a feature of Google Maps and Privacy Lobbyist who believe that Google is over stepping its bounds and jeopardizing them by giving anybody with a net connection details about their neighborhood, the street they live on and some time even their backyards. The feature lets net goers view the images of a streets; since it was launched in May 2007, it has been in the eye of controversy with questions being raised about what would b deemed as an invasion of privacy and several lawsuits have cropped up against the company in the matter some of the notable ones were:

Boring vs. Google:

The lawsuit was filed against the company by Aaron and Christine Boring from Pittsburgh. their family lives down a private street, but the Google Street View team took pictures not only of the private street but also reached their home; these images were subsequently posted on Google Maps including pictures of the couple’s home, pool and out building which in as alleged by the Borings compromised their security.

Since the lawsuit was filed by the Borings, Google has taken down the images from their website.

Google’s street view team repeated the feat on the neighboring street from the borings. Another family the McKee’s were also forced to raise concerns about the company’s Street View feature because the team drove up the Goldenbrook lane and continued taking pictures even when they reached the garages of the family’s home. Even though the McKee family did not file a lawsuit against the company, Google did take down the pictures of their home.

Skirmish in California:

Very few states were sparred from the efforts of the Street View team, in another incident from the State of California; the team drove up at least 100 private roads in the Sonoma County as reported by PressDemocrat.com. The team was also photographed driving on past a ; no trespassing sign on at least two occasions when they drove up on the 1200 foot road leading to the house of Betty Webb in Humbolldt County. In another similar incident, the drivers of the team not only ignored the ‘ no trespassing signs’, but the kept on driving and taking pictures even when they reached someone’s yard on a dirt road; pictures of the incident were again furnished by PressDemocrat.com.

The US Military against Street View:

In a separate incident, the US military complained that the street view team had compromised the security of several of their bases by taking pictures of these facilities from the streets. The Military was seeking the removal of all such photographs because they posed a potential threat to the facilities. A senior ranking officer, General Gene Renuart stated that the pictures show how the shutters go up and down, where the guards are in the facility and how to get in and out of the structures. Google, of course, honored the request made by Pentagon and the pictures were withdrawn. However, even after this was done, the US Military did find several images of their facilities all over Street View.

The pains of going global for Street View:

There was also an issue about people being accidentally photographed and their images being thrown over the site; some countries have very strict laws concerning such situations and keeping with them, Google had to modify its privacy law. The company has incorporated a facial recognition technology that can find faces and blur them so that the people in the pictures cannot be recognized. This technology is also applied to other private information like car license plates.

How Important Is Website Conversion?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

There is some amount of ambiguity on what generates income in an online venture; if you have a site that simply offers information about your brick and mortar business with no provisions for customers to buy your products or services online ; just driving traffic to your site will be adequate but if you are selling something or even if you have a website dedicated to internet marketing, increasing the traffic to your site will just be the first step to generating a profit because the next and most important step will be to convert the visitors; in other words, make them buy from you or a company that you are marketing. So it would not make sense to pump in a sizeable amount of money just to drive traffic to your site; you need a well rounded approach. So let’s discuss the various aspects of conversion:

What is website conversion?

We explored the concept with a one liner above but let’s did deeper this time. The people who visit a site have to follow a set procedure where they have to go through the desired point of action of the business and submit information; download files, purchase products or services etc. this would be the definition of website conversion. If the site offer ecommerce products and/or solutions; many people will add items to their shopping carts but not all of them will buy these products; in reality, only a small percentage of them will. The number of people who complete the transaction will be the conversion rate of the website. If you want to improve the conversion rate of your website, you will need to start by analyzing why customers do not buy the products that they add to their carts or why they drop out at certain points in the process.

What is a point of action or POA?

A POA can be defined as a set of actions that the webmaster would like the visitor to take; depending on the type of website; you can have a branch of POA’s where they are segregated into primary, secondary and sometimes even tertiary POAs. The primary POA is one which will generate the most amount of profit for the business; for instance, when a customer completes the purchase ; this would be primary POA while asking him to sign up for the websites newsletter will be the secondary POA. One of the primary problems that new website owners face is creating a website without a well defined POA; such websites are little more than brochures and they will not guide the visitors towards becoming purchasers.

What is the take rate?

The percentage of visitors who are interested in the POA is the ratio of desired actions divided by the number of visitors. For instance, if a B2B website is offering a downloadable demo as the POA; the number of people who click on the download link would form the take rate; whether they actually do download the page or not is secondary. The take rate is merely a figure that demonstrates the number of people who were interested in the POA. For instance, on an ecommerce website; the take rate would comprise of people who add items to their shopping art; whether or not they go through with the purchase will have no impact on the take rate. One of the simplest ways to improve the take ate of your website is to offer the opportunity to go through the POA on every page; you want to make it easy for your customers to purchase products from you whenever they decide to do so.

The website conversion rate: The conversion rate of a website is a figure that is calculated by dividing the total number of people who visit the website by the actual number of people who through the POA. For instance if 3 people purchase products from a website as opposed to the 100 visitors who fill out the contact form; this would put the website conversion rte at 3%. A simple principle is that improving the take rate of your site will also help to increase the conversion rate.

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Most website owners and online businessmen strive to improve the visibility of their site; the amount of traffic that a site receives is directly proportional to its online visibility. Anybody who has tried to research the topic ‘how to increase online visibility’ knows that there is certainly no dearth of options; however most website owners discover that they do not have enough time to research and implement all of these options. So what should an online entrepreneur do to easily and quickly increase the visibility of his online establishments?

SEO gurus come out with new tricks and tips each day to improve the online visibility of a site; unfortunately, some of these tricks only work once like one hit recording artist. However; there are some time tested strategies that work time after time; some of these have been around for as long as websites have graces the internet while others are fairly new yet equally potent; so here are some effective strategies to increase the online visibility of your site.

Social networking: You guessed it right; this is the new kid on the block with the rage about social networking sites gaining momentum in recent years; not only are these sites a wonderful way to keep in touch wit your friends but they also have immense potential to increase your online visibility at a negligible cost. If you have not yet opened an account with one of the social networking legends like Facebook or Twitter, you are missing out on one of the biggest opportunities to let people know about your business and the products and/or services that you offer.

Press Releases: These are form a part of some of the most effective and potent marketing strategies; they not only work online but also they have proved their mettle over several decades in print media as well. In recent years, they are being used extensively to improve the visibility of an online establishment. However, just like the press releases that were released by companies to print and broadcasting media had to be sensible and contain newsworthy information, your online press releases should also offer valuable information to your present and future customers about your company; for instance, the announcement of a special offer or a sale.

Blogging This is also a recent addition to the online marketing strategies band wagon; business and personal blogs have garnered quite a fan following in recent years to the point where some blogs have thousands of members yearning to put in their two words. The technology used to keep blogs updates is known as RSS feed; unlike articles and web page content; blogs are crawled almost immediately by search engines so the content is updated fast which in turn helps to increase traffic to your site. To use blogging as an effective marketing tool, you will need to blog 3 to 4 times a week.

Article Marketing: Another way to improve the search engine ranking of your site and to increase the traffic to your site is to market your articles to some of the prominent ezines on the internet. There are sever major directories that accept work from authors and lets them insert a link back to their site in the “About Author” box; apart from the links, this strategy also helps to establish you as an expert in your field which helps to attract visitors to your site.

Email Newsletters: You could also incorporate the regular publication of email based news letters in your internet marketing strategy; this again helps you to keep in touch with your customers; in time they start to like and trust you and this can be a very potent tool in the arsenal of any business man. So, the next time these customers want to buy a product or service in your niche; they think of nobody else but you

SEO: Your search engine optimization strategies when designing your site and its content will help you to improve your page rank and its a proven fact that most customers end up visiting the first three to five websites they find on a Google search page so being on top is essential here.

What Goes Into A Good Web Design?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

There is no doubt about the fact that good web designing plays an important role in attracting visitors o your site so here are some tips on how you can create a good first impression about the your site. These tips are applicable to both people who are revamping their site to improve the surfing experience that the site offers and for people who are designing a new site.

The loading time: This is a very important factor in establishing the popularity if a site; there is nothing more frustrating for the visitors than a site that takes several minutes to load just because it has so many graphics so this should be your number one concern After all, you cannot afford to forget that the internet is all about speed ,information and products at your finger tips so you simply cannot afford to have a slow loading site. Ask yourself how you reacted when you wee looking for something on Google and the first link that you click on did not load for a few minutes; the likely answer will be that you moved on to the second link and that is what your visitors will do as well.

Web gimmicks: Your visitors are on your site because they need information or intend t buy the products or services that you are offering by including meaningless and annoying web gimmicks you will just be driving them away; this particularly holds true about the landing page or the home age of your site; do not include anything irritating such as blaringly loud music, a overly slow loading flash animation etc, no pop up advertisements etc. In simple words, leave the gimmicks out to make the customers stay on.

A meaningless splash page: Nobody has the time or the inclination to watch a page that has a lot of impressive animation that foes not offer an iota of relevant information; once again it would be worth while to remember why your visitors are on your site. Also, your visitors will not appreciate being made to wait while the graphics load on the first page. It would be akin to going to a store to but a product and waiting in line to meet the hotshot sales men; most people would scamper in the opposite direction and that is exactly what your visitors will be inclined to do as well, so tread carefully here. Ensure that your homepage and landing page offer all the information hat your visitor might want to know about the company and a brief idea about the products and services that you offer.

The message should be very clear: The message that you are trying to convey to your visitors should be very clear; do not beat around the bush nor should you use high pressure sales tactics because this is a sure fire way to drive your customers away. This particularly holds true in case of blog pages; instead of using archaic difficulty to understand ideas and language, make it easy for your users o understand what you are trying to tell them.. Do not make them guess because this an be risky instead tell them quickly what they want to know so that they are happy; and when we are talking about a sales page a happy customer is also the customer who buys the product or services.

A coordinated design: This is pretty obvious, the design should work together as a whole, if you have every page with a unique navigation system or if the design varies for ever age, your customers are not going to like it. Your endeavor should be to make your customers feel comfortable not only wit the site design but also with the fact that you are a reputable organization and as such have taken the trouble to design a good site that offers al the information that the customer might need in the easiest possible away. The logo of your site should be consistent across all pages, and so should be the color scheme and the navigation system; all of these together create a coordinated design.
