Having Your Hearing Tested and the Different Types of Test

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Having a ear and hearing test is important if you believe that you are starting to lose your ability to hear. Having a hearing test is also important if you begin to acquire tinnitus which is a consistent noise within the inner ear. This is generally a ringing sound but can be can other types of noise too. The first step for a hearing or tinnitus test is for your medical professional to physically inspect your ear. Using an instrument with a light at the end, called an auriscope or otoscope, they'll look for anything that isn't standard, including; discharge, a prominent ear drum, perforated ear drum or an object that might be blocking the ear. You can also be asked about any agony or pain which you could be getting.

The are a few hearing tests and these may include murmuring or a ticking watch, tuning fork, audiometry or bone oscillator:

Murmuring or employing a ticking watch. One ear at a time will be blocked and the nurse or doctor will test your hearing with sounds of disparate volumes. In the whispering test, you may have to repeat the words out loud, when you hear them murmured.

Tuning fork. A tuning fork is a Y-shaped metallic object which, when tapped, produces sound waves at a fixed pitch. It’s generally used for tuning instruments. Doctors use a tuning fork by tapping it on their elbow or knee, to make it vibrate, then holding it at each side of your head. It's going to be held first in the air near your ear, to see how well you hear sounds that are transmitted thru air vibrations. Then it may be held to the bone behind your ear (mastoid bone) to discover how well you can hear when the waves are broadcast to your interior ear through the bone.

Audiometry. In this test you are given earphones to wear, which are attached to a machine. Sounds of different volumes (loudness) are played thru the earphones, and you've got to indicate whether you heard them. You might have to raise a hand or click a button. Youngsters could have to move a coloured block.

Bone oscillator. A little different test can be used to check how well you hear sounds that are sent through the bone instead of the air. This uses an instrument called a bone oscillator placed against the bone behind your ear.

Your hearing may be fine and tinnitus is often a sign of another health issue that may be not related to hearing. For example in can be damage to the ear itself, a previous head injury or changes to blood pressure in the arteries near to the ear.

How One Can Remedy Their Hearing Loss

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Children in the US that have hearing problems have reached at least three million. What these statistics fail to mention is that specific people who suffer from it. Many times there is no one to confirm if indeed Johnny Jones or Mary Smith will require special attention. The statistic was acquired by the American Hearing Society by simply taking the number of children that were tested and spreading it across the total population of children in the country. Children that live in the rest of the states that do not require hearing tests will go on with the rest of their lives not having been diagnosed with a hearing problem.

It is actually a shock to many the number of children that try to interact and live normal lives not knowing or admitting they have a hearing problem. These kids are taunted most of the time and are called names like stupid. These children sometimes think they hear things normally or they are too scared to tell others. A boy was one case that showed how kids would be afraid to tell people. At age 3 this child had scarlet fever which made him quieter.

He was unable to respond many times to what his parents wanted him to do. Spanking was what his father did to him every time he was unable to do what he was told to. According to his mother he was not a bad kid his mind was just always else where. At times shouting was the only way to get this boy to do something. Finally his son heard her and did the errand. It took impression to make this boy do something his mother said.

In school the boy did not play with the other children too well. Having a big class he was still able to do well in his studies. In the state that the boy was a part of, the administration of hearing test was really up to the community. When the boy turned 9 the school he was sent to decided to conduct audiometer tests.

It was then discovered that he actually had hearing problems because of the fever he had when he was younger. A hearing aid is what helps him hear better these days. Of course there is still much home in the medical field that his hearing will come back.

In reality not every case will end in a positive note. Even if there is a state law requiring testing and even if it is properly enforced, treatment does not automatically follow. It is not so much the tests conducted that are a problem but the following up of it or the treatments. The process is simple since al you need to go is getting the test and have a card on file. Neither the parents nor the school will do any follow ups on this. This can cause the problem to become worse. The mother is the logical person to notice impaired hearing. It should be done prior to the child entering school. All she would have to do is put him in the next room and speak to him and see if he acts like other children, then she’d know. But some parents won’t face it. Now, simple home hearing test are present that mothers can use to test their child. Does your baby react to sudden noises like a telephone ringing, a door banging, loud clapping of hands, dogs barking? He should be able to, with normal hearing. Does your baby react if you suddenly come into his line of vision, as if he hasn’t heard you enter the room? This would indicate impaired hearing. Are there discharges or odors from your child’s ear, or deformities or swellings in or about the external ear canal? These are danger signals. A child that is old enough will surely react if you call them from another room when they hear well. When a child is talking properly then they can hear well. It also follows that not hearing things will force them into silence.

The Experience Of Hearing Loss

Friday, May 27th, 2011

More than 9 million elderly individuals specifically those who are 65 and above experience hearing loss which is the third most common chronic condition. With this, ageing individuals experience anatomical and physiological changes that happen in the auditory system. There are two possible reasons for hearing loss wherein a person may have experience natural changes that occur with age and secondly, degenerative changes might take place in the central auditory nervous system. This would in effect slow down how a person could communicate properly.

Sensorineural and mixed types of hearing loss can possibly be associated with the changes brought about by presbycusis to the different parts of the auditory system. Thos older adults experience a more difficult time in dealing and understanding speech with a higher frequency especially if background noise is present. A person’s processing of speech slows down as well as his or her understanding and communication skills once he or she gets old because the way how an individual’s central auditory nervous system functions is slower now. There are cases which constitute of presbycusis and for this matter, hearing loss is sensorineural and even permanent that is why the medical treatment for this is still unsure.

If a person now has hearing loss, certain problems will arise such as communicating well with family and doing certain activities that involves the participation of the sense of hearing. Those who don’t have the ability to hear clearly suffer from shame because of not understanding well what they hear. If in a social gathering, these people rather not comment at anything at all since they do not understand what the issue or topic is all about.

A person doesn’t need to worry about having limited options in choosing the best type of hearing aid because this device is offered in different varieties such as changes in the types of microphones, noise suppression circuits, frequency response capability, programmability and miniaturization. With the improved selection and fitting techniques, older adults are now able to benefit from it. Those elderly individuals who were able to use these technological advancements were not all satisfied with the results.

Research showed that to some, a person wearing hearing aid is stereotyped as old and has a defect. They feel somehow uncomfortable because they think that people will pay attention to this flaw. Manipulating the controls of hearing aids is difficult which is why most of them do not like wearing it and also, it amplifies background noise.

To prevent psychosocial behavior, an individual needs to accept that he or she is suffering from a hearing loss. The belief of these people is that once they contradict what their real condition is, then others would begin to accept them. Others believe that when they have used a hearing aid as per recommendation by the specialist, their condition grew worse.

The fact is that there are technological advancements for hearing aids every year. Usually, the people who experience hearing loss are 65 years old and above thus they are the ones who wear hearing aids and other assistive devices for hearing. This chronic condition is the third most common problem in older people which also serves as a basis of how a population is able to function well.

One’s daily routines will be gravely affected if that person develops hearing loss. With the help of hearing aids, a person should be able to move independently in his or her atmosphere thus improving communication ability. There should be realistic expectations before a person would wear this so as to maximize the use of this device.

The Many Remedies For Hereditary Hearing Loss

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Family is one potential reason why a loss of hearing becomes inevitable. For those with a limited sense of hearing, some can blame their genes. Sometimes, a hearing problem can be considered congenital. Nonprogressive hearing loss is when your hearing loss condition remains the same for a certain period of time but if the condition changes, it is considered to be progressive. It is not both ears that get a condition like this.

In line with nonsyndromic hereditary hearing loss, this is when a loss of hearing is the only thing that the person has been diagnosed with. It is possible to experience complete deafness in this case. There is such a thing as a hearing loss problem that is mixed.

There are times when hearing loss occurs because of clogs in the auditory canal or problems when it comes to the eardrum or the three small ear bones and these are all indicative of conductive hearing loss. There is a path from outside of the ear to the ear canal that sound waves need to travel to. The ear drum is not the last stop for sound waves as these need to pass through three small ear bones and the cochlea.

Ears are essential too for preserving balance. Watch out because hearing loss can cause you to lose your balance. Something that hearing also affects is positioning. Gravity is something we cannot avoid and this is why we depend on the saccule and the utricle found here. There are three of each when it comes to the semicircular canal.

Especially for those who are older, progressive hearing problems should be watched out for. When it comes to the ossicles, spongy bone tissue develops and this causes problems with their functioning. Here is where you might encounter woes when it comes to otosclerosis. Teenagers and young adults usually face problems when it comes to otosclerosis. Researchers also say that it is rare for otosclerosis to occur past the age of 50.

In some types of conductive hearing loss, surgery can be an option to get better. Usually, in line with sensorineural hearing loss, you have a permanent problem. Do think about learning sign language if necessary. As a form of communicating, those with no hearing make use of their sight.

Remember that each person’s diagnosis is different as it will rely on the type of hearing loss that is encountered. Plenty of illnesses cannot be attributed to a loss of hearing. Something useful is sign language especially when the loss of hearing can be attributed to genetics.

No Boundaries When It Comes To Hearing Loss

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

When there is a loss of hearing, you may experience issues when it comes to daily activities. When it comes to this, millions of people are affected in the United States. What most adults over 65 years of age experience is a bout with presbycusis. In our ears, there is this threshold sensitivity that can easily be affected by our exposure to intense sounds and sounds in this category may be those that we are exposed to when we hunt or ride a motor bike. Apart from turning up the volume on the television, a person with this problem might need to ask someone to repeat him or herself. Speaking will no longer be easy for someone who experiences a loss of hearing. When you have a quiet space and this is where you conduct a talk between a patient and a clinician, you will not be able to see anything related to a hearing problem considering how the speech message will have the same cues.

Someone who is experiencing a bout with medical hearing loss should consider visiting an otolaryngologist. Considering that there are cases where medical intervention is not needed, a person can simply make use of hearing aids. Should hearing loss cause communication problems, a person needs to make use of hearing aids.

Four basic styles of hearing aids are available. First, you have something that leads the sound into the ear canal through a tube and ear mold and this is the behind the ear model. Everything here is standard in terms of the fit except for the ear mold. This style has the greatest number of circuit and feature options, and it is easy for most people to handle.

Through and through, the in-the-ear model is specially made. It is sound that is projected into the ear canal after the full concha of the external ear is covered. This is a pretty simple hearing piece to use. From the concha, a part of the in the canal model will be protruding.

This is a hearing aid that is rather small and is not for everyone. There are few features available here and the batteries are tiny. In line with this, the completely in the canal style is perfect if you have mild to moderate hearing loss and when it comes to this, it is meant for someone with a medium sized ear canal who does not like to have a protruding aid.

Before the audiologist can program a hearing aid for a patient, it is important for all information pertaining to hearing evaluation results, ear canal acoustics, and perception of sounds to be clear. What you can do to a hearing aid is change the fit over and over again. There are audiometric configurations which call for only a few frequency bands.

It is a hearing loss problem that can afflict anyone. Being able to spot hearing loss early on will help us a lot. We are armed with technology which allows us to deal with such health issues better.

Hearing Loss In Children

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

There are people with a limited sense of hearing in both ears. Kids can encounter numerous kinds of hearing problems. For some people, they develop problems when it comes to the cochlear hair cells, the auditory nerve, or the brain and this leads to severe hearing loss that is considered to be the sensorineural type but when it comes to conductive hearing loss, what you will be dealing with here are obstructions in the inner ear.

A low decibel sound range applies to young people. There are a number of hearing loss kinds. One thing that causes otitis media to manifest is poor hygiene. At an early age, this can strike children. Annually, several kids experience this problem. Here is where all people can be affected.

If your parents are regular smokers, this might be a condition that you will battle with eventually. Before the age of eight, this is a more serious problem. One kind of hearing impairment that tends to affect children during the tender ages is chronic secretory otitis media. Boys and a lot of those under eight years old face this issue.

When it comes to infants in America, this is a common problem faced daily. Newborns are susceptible to abnormalities and one of them is congenital deafness. When you have 1,000 children, there will be 3 that will experience a hearing impairment. Hearing impairments in children happen at an early age or during birth. US kids, tons of them, encounter conditions like hearing loss.

A loss of hearing in children usually manifest as otitis media wherein the Eustachian tubes are blocked leading to the blockage of sound. When it comes to the middle ear, the fluids are susceptible to viral infection. Considering that the problem persists, it can become more severe and lead to chronic secretory otitis media.

When it comes to this, you can use medication. It is secretory otitis media that can be left to disappear. You can expect the hole in the eardrum to close when the tube falls out. Taking Myringotomy into consideration, this is an outpatient procedure.

There are people who develop severe hearing impairments. You will still have some residual hearing when it comes to this. Hearing aids are not standard so you have options. Depending on the kind of hearing loss that you have, you can get a hearing aid that is small but perfect.

Joys Of An Audiologist

Friday, January 28th, 2011

A licensed Hearing Aid Specialist thinks back at the modernization he has witnessed in the local hearing aid center as he holds a hearing aid the size of a kidney bean. He exclaims that the technology was astounding as he itemizes the new parts and features of the much smaller digital hearing aids. He adds that even the behind the ear model of hearing aids has taken giant leaps in terms of quality in recent years.

But the same old school care his family has kept through 26 years will remain in him, he said, notwithstanding the savvy technology he is now surrounded with as he stands inside his Park Hills Plaza office. He shares that he performs hearing tests using a computer as the patient sits in a sound proof room, appropriately geared with small, foam earplugs. Not even the testing procedure remained untouched by change as there are no more big cups on the ears while conducting tests.

The more satisfying part of the trade, according to him, are the stories coming from satisfied patients. Even television issues pertaining to volume are involved in the stories he was referring to. It goes as far as grandchildren enjoying the company of their granddad who can finally listen to their stories. There is a great likelihood that a person who has difficulty hearing a group conversation will opt to draw away. But sometimes this is not enough reason for people to go ahead and seek medical attention, more so the final admission that they need hearing aids.

If all you wish for a hearing aid is discreetness, modern hearing aids have now answered your dilemma. They have also created several choices for the people who have limited resources. There are old pairs that they can even repair so that the patients can use them again.

You may now go to loud venues or work places with ear protection. Those who love to hunt may now protect their ears from the loud gunshot without lowering their awareness of their surroundings by means of electronic earplugs. Additionally, the hearing aid center has a waiting room full of assisted living devices for people with hearing impairment where a patient can choose devices in accordance to his lifestyle.

Gadgets to help you know that someone is calling are attached on doorbells and phone ringers with the use of bright lights. Hear your caller better with the phone model that amplifies the voice of the person on the other end and enjoy viewing television better with a device for that purpose. Hearing impairment or deep sleep will no longer stop you from being awakened by your alarm clock because they have a modification which includes a bed vibrator. Technology has never stayed put so that means you should also be dynamic and fast. They are wired to do this and will continue doing so, he said.

Hospitals Provide Testing To Assess Infant Hearing

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Statistics indicate that every year, in the U.S. alone about 12,000 babies have permanent hearing loss. The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management has come up with an alarming finding that three out of every 1,000 babies are born with some type of hearing loss, making this the most common birth defect.

From a simple discomfort in the ear to severe hearing disorders to complete deafness, there can be varying degrees of hearing loss. Children who suffer from hearing loss are given treatment and are, in some cases, required to wear hearing aids.

In extreme cases, doctors recommend what is known as cochlear implants. A damaged part of the ear will not sense even the amplified sounds delivered by the hearing aids; but implants bypass the damaged part and send audio signals straight to the auditory nerve. Whatever be the technology used, these devices are unable to restore hearing completely.

Doctors will always recommend that babies be screened as soon as possible after birth. Hearing therapy started within the first six months gives babies their best chance to develop their language skills.

A new procedure is proving very helpful in detecting hearing loss in babies immediately after birth. The newly introduced procedures ensure that if hearing loss is ascertained in the first six months from birth, the language development proceeds almost normally.

In a vast multitude of cases, hearing loss is detected in children only after they are 22 to 26 months old. Speech and language development problems happen to be the first symptoms that lead to the detection of hearing defects.

Before newborn babies are allowed to leave hospital, they are subjected to a new procedure that is able to identify hearing problems

Otacoustic Emissions are being used increasingly to determine how well a baby is able to hear. A probe is placed in the ear canal and sounds are delivered through it. The inner ear, also called the cochlea, produces an echo that is picked up by a microphone in the probe. The screening of each ear is completed in approximately 10 seconds while any other procedure would have taken at least 10 minutes.

The Auditory Brainstem Response test is the next step for those babies who do not pass the OAE. In the ABR test, a throwaway earphone delivers different sounds into the baby’s ears and three painless electrodes placed on the baby’s head and shoulders measure the hearing nerve’s responses.

Each ear takes no more than 15 minutes.

These tests are run when the babies are asleep. Most parents realize speech related and language problems in their children around the age of 2 years and this leads them on to the underlying hearing problem.

If all babies are screened, it will be possible to provide special attention to those who need it. This will be a boon for children because they can now expect to lead normal lives as well as develop their language skills like other children.

Babies who fail both these tests are sent to an audiologist for diagnostic testing. This happens in about two percent of the cases.

For infants as small as two or three months, amplification equipment can be deployed to make up for hearing loss. To ensure normal development, it is important that these children are given early help.

When Hearing Loss Can Be Prevented

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Issues when it comes to occupational disease and accidents can be linked to noise exposure and this is backed up by results from a study conducted by the WHO.

In terms of noise induced hearing loss, this is a very common problem when it comes to the work force.

Many workers are subjected to noise, not only in heavy industry, transport, building, and the armed services, where it would be expected, but also in farming and in offices, traditionally regarded as being quiet. Although not all deafness, of course, is occupationally induced, increasing industrialization and urbanization make it difficult to find any population that is not being subjected to undue noise. In a nationwide sample survey of 2,500,000 persons in the United States it was found that among employed males, impairment was most prevalent in skilled and semi-skilled workers and less in professional and business groups.

There is a difference that can be made by a job belonging to a higher economic position when it comes to work environment. There are more men than women who develop hearing problems. Males experience more problems when it comes to their hearing. The older people get, the more susceptible they become when it comes to hearing problems but men develop hearing problems earlier than women.

When it comes to something like this, the problem can be avoided. Occupations well known to be associated with hearing loss include aircraft crewing and maintenance, boiler making, forging, weaving, punch press operating, tunneling, foundry work, blasting, ship building, timber milling and paper making. Less obvious hazards are bell ringing, combine harvester driving, well drilling, shooting and the use of certain automated office equipment.

The maximum intensity to which an unprotected person should he subjected is probably around 133 Decibels. A regular drill operates with 110 Decibels of sound. Hearing loss is not something that is affected by the energy content that come with sounds. More damaging are high frequency sounds when it comes to this.

The ears have a primary defense in the form of a protective mechanism. Noise exposure that is excessive can lead a person to develop a transient deafness. Two hours is all it takes for the discomfort of noise exposure to disappear but ten days is the average recovery time when it comes to this problem. Day in and day out, lots of workers are exposed to noise in their work place and days off are not enough to give them time to heal. Rather than periodic exposure to noise, continuous noise is something that is more damaging.

Head noises apart from continuous hearing loss pertain to a dangerous level of hearing loss and another sign in this case is the difficulty experienced by a person when it comes to speech communication. One consideration made during job interviews pertains to speech communication. Such a concern like noise induced hearing loss is not affected by many laws but people should pay attention to it. Unlike in 1952, this is growing to be a worldwide problem in our modern day and age.
