Fighting Obesity In The USA

Monday, July 4th, 2011

The problem of obesity in America seems to grow larger everyday and almost everyone in the country is affected by the problem. There are of course many things which contribute to this problem. Where you live, your ethnic background, your age and you economic standing for example all feature in the equation.

Some of the most reliable statistics showing obesity trends come from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) which puts statistics together on a state-by-state basis. Looking over the latest statistics for the United States we see that the south and central area is hardest hit by obesity. States like Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee have obesity running at rates of between 30% and 35%. Neighboring states like Florida, Georgia, Kansas and Texas come in next in line with obesity running at between 25% and 29% while Colorado fairs best at under 20%. The majority of the northwestern states come in at between 20% and 24%.

Ethnic origins play a role in regional obesity rates. African Americans are 50% more likely to be overweight than white members of the same community, while Hispanics are 20% more likely to be overweight than their white counterparts. As a region all races living in the south are more likely to carry excess body fat than those living in the northeast and southwest.

Public health policies are just now beginning to address the role of schools and public assistance programs in helping to reduce the statistics in these areas. Diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and respiratory diseases are on the up trend in children who are obese. A lack of exercise and education are the main cause of this trend. As the problem continues to grow an already overwhelmed public health care system must find ways to combat the ever rising tide of childhood obesity.

Even though obesity is a public health problem, putting stricter guidelines on what people can and cannot eat raises a myriad of personal freedom issues. While public schools and guidelines for feeding children are becoming more sensible, educating families on the dangers of processed foods is the only thing that can truly make a difference. Food is a choice and children must be taught to make good choices on their own.

Obesity in the United States is on the rise and we have to watch its progress very carefully. And, if the problem is to be prevented from running out of control, the government is going to have to step in at some point and take control of this problem. Just how much the government can or should interfere is however a difficult question to answer.

Permanent Weight Loss: When To Eat Is The Missing Link

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

This is not just another article that tells you to go on a diet, when you look and feel fat. This article will provide you with information that will enable you to lose weight and keep it off. It will help you to achieve weight loss that will be permanent. To achieve permanent weight loss, you must understand what happens in your body when you eat.

What Happens When You Eat

Your body converts food that you eat into glucose. You will also hear glucose referred to as blood sugar. Your body uses glucose as its main source of energy. It is carried to the cells of your body by your bloodstream.

When glucose arrives in your blood stream, your body produces insulin. Insulin allows glucose to enter the cells of your body.

As your blood stream delivers glucose, if insulin was missing, your cells would be unable to receive it. This would deny your body the energy it needs to function.

The Key To Managing Your Weight

The single biggest factor that will determine if you gain weight or lose it, is your regulation of the quantity of insulin in your blood.

In the presence of excessive insulin after eating, your muscle cells take in just the amount of glucose they need in order to provide you with energy. The insulin then causes the remaining glucose to be stored as fat on your body.

Also, excess insulin in your blood prevents the burning of fat. So if you do not manage the amount of insulin your body produces after each meal, not only you will be adding fat to your body, but you will not be burning fat as well.

What Brings About Excessive Insulin In Your Body?

There are several causes. In this article, I am addressing the biggest cause, because I think it will be most helpful to you in managing your weight.

Once 2 hours have elapsed after eating a meal, your blood sugar level (amount of glucose in your blood) starts to fall. This is because the glucose has been absorbed by your cells. Your blood sugar level will continue to go lower, as more time elapses without eating. The longer the time between eating something, the lower your blood sugar will go. When you finally eat something, your blood sugar will soar to a high level. A high blood sugar level prompts your body to produce a large amount of insulin. This is the way your body works.

When To Eat

The ideal eating routine, to effectively manage your blood sugar level, is to eat something every 2 hours. You should not go longer than 3 hours without eating. You should be eating at least 5-6 meals in a day.

Obviously, as you are eating this many meals per day, each meal should be smaller in size than the meals you have been accustomed to eating. Also, never skip a meal. Skipping a meal is a sure way to raise the amount of insulin in your system.

Please realize that there is so much more to know about controlling your weight, but this information gets you started in the right direction.

Evade Weight Loss Surgery By Losing Weight Slow!

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Keeping power is certainly one of those things that individuals who’re trying to burn fat find a way to lose relatively readily. In their own minds, unwanted weight can by no means be lost rapidly enough. People wish to be thin, plus they want it now

The result is a microwave weight loss mentality. Reality tv’s information regarding slimming down is that fat loss can be effective when lost fast. As a result of lose weight fast hype of one hour reality television shows, quick weight reduction seems like it can be achieved very effortlessly. This notion by modern society is a little different from what reality genuinely is like.

Speedy weight loss seems like the fundamental hope of any person who is big, however could it be wise? The fact is that it isn’t really the absolute best way to approach losing fat. Our mind will say to all of us that your top approach to shed pounds would be to just try and get it done as fast as possible. This thought leads individuals to try to prohibit their diet while at the same time engaging in excessive physical exercise. Problem is it simply does not last.

There are many complications that can arise from dropping pounds too fast. Just what many people do not understand is that when you lose weight quickly, you will be losing several types of tissue in your body. Generally this is body fat and muscle. The quicker that body weight is dropped, the more muscle is lost, not body fat.

Generally everyone wants lasting results fast, however when we remove lean muscle, it isn’t feasible. Fat is likely to return faster than earlier once the metabolically active muscle is reduced. It seems like a scary movie, but its true, the quicker we shed pounds, the more quickly it will come back (and often more). Sound like a lost cause? It isn’t really. Once you learn the way in which the game of weight loss is played, then your focus changes to building up muscle mass smartly.

There are particular cases where it is okay to lose more than two pounds a week. For individuals who are actually morbidly obese, and the initial body weight is extremely large, you go by way of percentage. It is commonly advocated that 1% weight loss per overall body weight is ok.

Consider that you’ll want to try to remember a few things any time you’re establishing a weight loss program at an increased weight. Where the real blubber, I mean the rubber, hits the road is and how much fat tissue is dropped in the approach. It’s also advised that a doctor oversees the process so it will end up being healthy.

Prior to engaging in bariatric surgery, it may be useful to evaluate the bariatric surgery testimonials to understand if the procedure would be a benefit to your needs. Although this particular surgical treatment has demonstrated to be a successful method in treating obesity, it is in the long run only a tool. If you want your weight loss to be permanent, it is very best to take off the fat over time.

Weight Loss Surgery Is An Option

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Without a doubt one of the biggest issues we have in society is obesity. It is one of the biggest epidemics in North America, and people’s quality of life is being severely reduced because of it. Everyone’s heard of Super Size Me, and the media keeps talking about how our society has now become fat. It is logical then to say that, if people were to lose weight, their quality of life would increase significantly.

There are many different types of diets, and whether they work or not really depend on the user. Of course, there are fad diets, diets that are quite dangerous. However, for some people dieting and exercising is almost next to impossible. The next option therefore is surgery. Generally there are four different types of surgery one can undergo. They all work essentially under the same principle: make you feel full faster while eating less by reducing capacity of food eaten.

First off we have the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, aka “Stomach Stapling”. This procedure is known to be safer than the more drastic gastric bypass, which basically rewires your digestive system by bypassing your stomach. However, this procedure is not at all reversible, as it requires stapling and cutting of the stomach. There are many serious complications that can arise from this surgery. One real advantage of this surgery is though, it does not interfere with your body’s intake of nutrition, thus reducing the chance of malnutrition.

Up next we have what doctors call the Biliopancreatic Diversion surgery. A large part of your stomach is removed, while the remaining part is diverted straight to the final part of the small intestine. You can be sure that your stomach would be stapled, and cut up, along with your bowls. Because of this, this surgery has the highest mortality rate out of all the procedures. And you can look forward to a life time of mal-nutrition monitoring and supplements. But here’s a useful tidbit of health info: this surgery does give you the fastest, most rapid weight loss out of all the surgeries.

Mentioned earlier, the third option we have is the gastric bypass. Stomach Stapling is as what it is; your stomach is stapled into a smaller pouch. This of course reduces the amount of food you can eat, and allows you to feel full with less food. It also forces your body to absorb less of the nutrition in the food. However, as with all these major surgical options, this procedure is next to impossible to reverse. And there’s also the dumping syndrome – food has the potential of going through your digestive system.

The last, and safest surgery is the Laproscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure, aka Lap-Band. It works under the same principle of reducing the amount of food you eat, by placing a limit on it. However, because it uses an adjustable band instead of stapling or removing portions of your digestive system, it is reversible. It is done via a laparoscope, meaning it is much less invasive than the other procedures – small incisions are used. As a result, recovery time for the procedure is quick, and complications are minimized. Weight lost results is comparable with the other procedures, and again, this is completely reversible.

Before choosing surgery as an option for weight loss, always make sure to do your research and consult with your doctor. This is not a simple matter. Not only could you potentially transform your life, but you need to ensure that what you’re doing is best suited for you. Healthy living doesn’t come easy!

Losing Weight: Some Possible Exercises

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

In today’s busy world, many of us have a tough time trying to make time for exercise. We all know the advantages of exercise, and know that it is probably one of the best things we can do for our health. In reality, even if we keep saying ‘I don’t have time for exercise’, it’s really a matter of prioritizing your time. If you truly do care about your health, then you will make time for exercise.

To help you make best use of your time for exercise, below is a list of easy to do, equipment-free (or if it does use equipment, very easy to obtain or create your own) exercises. They’ve all been proven to work and are very effective – so long you do them regularly. Regularly means at least two to three times a week, for sessions of half an hour to an hour. Not that long right?

Walking This is probably one of the easiest exercises a person can do. We use our cars too often now and with many jobs being in the office, lose the for some physical activity. But it’s quite simple to get back to it; instead of parking so close to the office, park a little further away. Instead of driving, take the bus. Or even, take some time out of your break and take a brisk walk outside.

Stairs Take the stairs instead of taking the elevator! So long you don’t live on the 100th floor or something crazy like that, you can get some real good exercise out of this.

Swimming Perhaps one of the best exercises one person can do. It works your whole body. Know how Olympic swimmers look like? Well, they didn’t look the way they do by doing nothing. Whether you are an athlete or not, it is always important to make health plans ahead of time, so you can measure the length of your exercise routines.

Biking Another fun exercise that anyone can do. Pick a nice park somewhere and bike in it. Enjoy a little bit of nature zooming by while exercising. Can be both relaxing and exhilarating.

Push ups This is a tried and true technique to build up your arm and shoulder muscles. So long you work yourself a sweat doing these exercises, there’s no reason for it to not show any results. There are also so many variations of this exercise that there will almost always be a tougher version of the push up. Don’t under estimate this exercise.

Pull-ups One of my all time favourites, it works almost your complete upper body. All you really need is a bar that you can pull your body up from (hence pull-up). You can easily put one up yourself. The only disadvantage this exercise it is hard; many people can’t even do more than 1 pull-up. But don’t despair! Even if you can only do one per set in the beginning, as long as you keep up at it, I can almost guarantee that you’ll start improving and see results.

Ultimately for any of these exercises to have any results, you have to keep doing them routinely. It must become a habit to do it, else you won’t see results.

5 Lies About Reducing Bingo Wings And Protein

Monday, March 15th, 2010

There is simply way too much confusion out there because of all the fad diets and all the marketers. Women are more confused than ever when it comes to flabby arms and protein. Perhaps you are confused like I used to be?

I know I was confused back when I was doing research.

Finding the truth can be like finding a needle in a haystack. There is simply way too much marketing material to navigate. Unfortunately, not knowing how to tweak your protein consumption can set back your flabby arms mission.

So here are 5 misconceptions about flabby arms and protein:

1. Powders and bars are superior to food. Whole food will always provide a superior supply of protein because protein from whole food sources will digest slower and will be accompanied by a whole range of additional nutrients.

2. Having protein shakes galore reduces flabby arms. While protein from REGULAR FOOD improves hormonal profiles and regulates hunger, going overboard with shakes will set you back because you’ll get tons of calories without a sense of fullness.

3. Fast absorbing protein is best. Just like with carbohydrates, slower digestion is better. Any time you spike a nutrient in your bloodstream there is going to be a subsequent drop. And protein is no exception.

4. Bigger is better. We love big portions and protein is no exception. If your protein intake exceeds 30% of your total caloric intake, however, the positives turn into negatives. So have small servings of protein in every meal and stay away from the meat buffets.

5. Hormone-enhanced meat is bad. There have NOT been any solid studies showing a direct link to hormone-enhanced meat and a decrease in female health. However, there are solid ethical (and ecological) arguments for avoiding said meats.

Getting rid of flabby arms doesn’t have to be hard. The key here is to ignore the marketing hype and stick to what has been proven by solid research. And knowing how to properly manage your protein intake is critical for losing arm fat.

Interesting Tricks For Enhanced Weight Loss

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Plastic surgery aside, there is no magic bullet for fat loss. The good news, however, is that there are some hacks you can implement that make things much easier.

The main issue here, however, is that too many people rely on ultra high doses of caffeine pills to lose weight. While these may work in the short term, they will eventually lose their efficacy.

So here are some odd nutrition tricks that work to help you lose more weight:

1. Start eating fat and protein before you begin eating carbs: The more you can space this out the better. You see, it takes 20 minutes for your body to secrete feel full hormones from your fat and protein foods. So if you have fat and protein beforehand, by the time you start eating carbs you will feel full already.

2. Have fiber: Now you already know that fiber is good for you and that it slows down digestion. However, having lots of fiber early in the day seems to have the biggest effect on weight loss. So make sure you really focus on fiber early in the day.

3. Stay away from big plates and bowls: When you use bigger plates and bowls, your visual system will not let you feel full until you have eaten everything. And eating everything on that giant plate will not help your weight loss efforts.

4. Eat slowly: Now this isn’t for etiquette purposes. Instead, eating slowly gives your body time to let the wide range of feel full hormones kick in. If you eat a lot very quickly, your body will not have enough time to gauge how many calories you have eaten.

5. Heat up your diet: Adding lots of hot spices and hot vegetables like peppers to your diet, produces feel full feelings. The key here is to spread out the intake across many meals. So get creative and start including hot foods in your daily routine.

Losing weight is no walk in the park. However, it doesn’t have to be an insurmountable undertaking either. So start implementing these tricks today, don’t delay!

4 Negative Aspects Of Carbs And Arm Fat

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Finding a good nutritional strategy for losing bingo wings can be like navigating a mind field. After all, marketing has made finding the truth harder than ever.

Are you having a hard time picking the right diet?

If so, you’re not alone. I suspect that most women are utterly lost when it comes to solid nutrition for arm flab loss, I know I was.

So here are 4 reasons why you shouldn’t go on a high carb diet for arm flab loss:

1. Sugar overdose. Being around lots of carbs means being around lots of sugar in one form or another. And if you have a sugar addiction you should definitely stay away from high carb eating. After all, once you start having sugar it will be very hard to stop.

2. Can increase insulin resistance. The research has shown time and again that those with insulin resistance do far better with lower carb diets. So if you’re insulin resistant, high carb dieting is not for you.

3. Massive hunger spikes. If you do not eat a LARGE amount of vegetables when going high carb expect some major hunger swings because carbs will drive your blood sugar levels up and then down.

4. Extremely slow fat loss. Expect extremely slow fat loss when doing a high carb diet. If you’re looking for lightening quick results, then this type of diet is NOT for you.

Now high carb diets can work for some women: those with fast metabolisms and no insulin resistance. How can you tell if you’re insulin resistant? Look at your stomach and if it’s disproportionately large compared to your other body parts, then you may be insulin resistant. Insulin resistance increase visceral fat, the fat that is around the organs in your stomach.
