Tinnitus Maskers – What Are They

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Are You Suffering From Tinnitus? A Tinnitus masker will be the ideal answer for all individuals suffering from Tinnitus as this unique gadget masks the disturbing sound. Tinnitus maskers are a variety of devices that create an artificial sound enough to suppress the annoying sound that is generated in the ears of those suffering from this condition.

Prior to taking advantage of a Tinnitus masker you should consult a doctor to make certain that the device will work for you when used. These maskers are basically sound distracters. It is best to use hearing aid devices by those suffering from Tinnitus that works both as a hearing aid as well as a Tinnitus masker. The maskers generate a high frequency sound that subdues the irritating sound of ringing that those suffering from this condition face.

The way they work is that these devices increase the sound level in the surroundings so as to mask the actual ringing sound that Tinnitus sufferers in most cases have to deal with. Tinnitus maskers are most effective during the nighttime so you are able to sleep or take a nap and relax.

Some of the artificial sounds generated include sound of waves, the soothing sound of rainfall and various synthetic noises that distract your ear from the irritating sound of ringing and provide you with instantaneous relief and enables you to relax.

If you are a severe patient it is important to use the masker on a regular basis and 24/7 to totally mask Tinnitus. Maskers which are wearable are best suited for the process.

Though there is no definite cause for the Tinnitus syndrome to develop, it is in most of the cases because of a damage caused in the year by loud explosion sound, ear infections, ear wax or some form of ear allergies. Tinnitus maskers as the name suggests masks the ringing sound with other sounds that are produced artificially. Dr Jack Vernon was the creator of these devices around 1970’s. . Nowadays as technlogy is moving forward some steps each and every day, you also get Tinnitus masker pillows which help you to have a peaceful night sleep.

Reasons That Choosing The Most Suitable Hearing Aid Is Critical

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

If you’re thinking about getting a hearing device, then picking a provider with a wide array of suppliers is important. We think that no individual manufacturer can meet the needs of everyone. Therefore, the amount of selection from providers like National Hearing Care is still an important differentiation.

An independent owned firm, the National Hearing Care is not allied to any single hearing aid maker. As a result, National Hearing Care is able to offer clients “True Choice” of various instruments for hearing from a wide variety of suppliers.

Some people can correct or improve their problem with an amplifying system. Often, they will be directed to purchase a hearing aid, instead. Addressing this pitiful result is a challenge for the hearing professional in dealing with traditionally held misconceptions.

Many people fear utilizing hearing aids due to the aesthetics of the devices. Other concerns are based upon the actual level of improvement in their quality of life. However, there have been several breakthroughs in the technology in the devices that prove these preconceived ideas about hearing aids to be false. More needs to be done in spreading this information, and in ways that would bring out of just the consulting room of the doctors office, so that more people can live the quality lives that they desire.

With fashion designers being moved to the front lines of product imagery, and engineers moved a couple steps back, a lot has been done to make the hearing aid less noticeable as an effort to take any cosmetic issues out of the picture. Engineers jobs have been working to get the hearing aid to function at its best with the design created by fashion designers. This new dichotomy at the manufacturers has improved recognition of the devices technical attributes. These tweaks have advanced the field with enormous strides and the pace of continued advancement is quite fast. Also, the dedication to fashion design has allowed the visual appeal of the devices to soar.

In the past five years, the custom molded “in the ear” models have become less popular in favor of smaller instruments behind the ear.

These behind the ear devices are more attractive and more wearable. They are lighter, smaller, and less visible and bulky.

Having an ear mold is now unnecessary for many hearing aid wearers. These new devices transport sound waves to your ear through a a nearly transparent capillary tube, which is connected to a tiny amplifier. This amplifier–or loudspeaker–sits in your ear canal. No more do people have to ensure bulky, clunky ear molded devices with thick tubes. No more do you have to walk around feeling like your ear is blocked. Most of the time, people cannot even detect that you’re wearing a hearing aid. You only fool with the device minimally.

The new models are often compatible with your stereo, MP# player, mobile or home phone, and television via a Bluetooth. These improvements technologically have helped to fill the gap suffered by hearing aide customers busy with typical repetitive tasks. What’s great is the ability to take on these daily tasks without a major effort being involved.

Computer algorithms are at the heart of almost all hearing instruments today. Vast amounts of data processing ability are built into the sound chips of hearing aids today. Since sound can now be shown by a number inside a computer, the numbers can be saved, changed and rearranged in a way that suits whatever sound environment is

What this means is that the hearing aid itself will be able to identify if the wearer is hearing music, and whether someone is speaking in a quiet or loud room thanks to the dual microphones that are placed in the mechanism. Once the device determines what environment the wearer is in, it will subtly alter its sound processing to return the clearest sound to the wearer that is possible. After a while of use, the hearing aid will be able to adapt to the preferences of the wearer completely automatically each time that they enter a given sound environment.

Whistling, or feedback, is eliminated by the new generation hearing instruments with an open ear design, another major advancement in helping the wearer have a genuinely improved experience. The natural acoustics of the ear are not interfered with by blocking the ear canal, as with older designs that were moulded to fit inside the ear canal.

In conclusion, there are many exciting new technologies being incorporated on hearing devices that improve their utility and comfort and also will challenge the strongest contentions of the skeptics. It will be a pleasant surprise to experience the genuine improvement in the quality of life that can be obtained by the technological advancements available to assist with hearing problems.

Things To Take Into Consideration To Find The Best Hearing Aid

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Nowadays, we have become familiar with rating things especially electronic goods. You will find all kinds of consumer guides that advise you on the best of everything. Thus what is the best hearing aid? The answer is that there is no certain best hearing aid, and there is no real way to test all the hearing aids which are on the market to find out which one will work well for you. There are numerous reasons that you cannot select among the best digital hearing aids. It has everything to do with the fact that hearing aids have to be chosen according to very particular criteria.

Level of Hearing Problems

When you are deciding what the best hearing aid is for you, a major aspect would be the extent of your hearing loss. An individual who has mild hearing problem will need totally different hearing aids. Therefore the best hearing aid for someone who has mild hearing loss will not be suitable for someone with profound hearing loss.

Another factor to take into consideration is the impairment of hearing based on the different frequencies. A lot of people have difficulty hearing things which are in higher frequencies while some have difficulties with sounds all across the frequency ranges.

Volume Control

The best hearing aid for you could also depend on the volume control. A lot of people prefer to be able to control the volume on their hearing aids by themselves while others would prefer to find the volume adjusted automatically based on the volume of sounds around them. The latter kind is the best hearing aid for anyone who dislikes fiddling with small items.

Appearance

The appearance of the hearing aid can also affect what is considered to be the best hearing aid by many people. A lot of people prefer to get a thing that is fairly small and almost invisible. While this is great for aesthetic reasons, a small hearing aid that fits right down in the ear canal may not always be perfect.

However if you’re able to reach perfect sound with this kind of hearing aid, then this is the best hearing aid for you. Though remember that it may not always be possible to get an ‘invisible’ hearing aid. You will have to have a careful fitting before you can decide on the best hearing aid that is out there for you. Make sure to seek advice from an experienced audiologist.

There are numerous other types of hearing aid are offered out there. You can check out BTE hearing aid site to find Miracle Ear hearing aids and related information.

How To Decide Whether To Buy A Stair Chair Lift Or Not

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

We all know what a stair chair lift is so I won’t bore you with some innocuous details about how they operate. Rather, I would like to recount a story about my grandmother who was suffering from mobility issues and how we had struggled between our love and loyalty with the obvious monetary considerations about purchasing the stair chair.

Born in Italy in the early 1900’s my grandmother was stricken with polio at an early age. The disease limited her mobility and left her with a severe limp that grew increasingly worse as the years went on. Not one to complain she went about her daily chores with nary a complaint. As she reached her 75th birthday her mobility was no longer something she could overcome with her tough Italian mindset. It was becoming increasingly difficult for her to get around in her home. You see she lived in an old brownstone in Brooklyn, New York with narrow steps that would make a woman half her age struggle to climb.

It was now time to make a decision that would be the best for her. She refused to go into a nursing home and she wouldn’t move in with one of us. She wanted to remain in her home and live independently. As a very religious woman she wanted to be able to attend church everyday and the church just happened to be right next door to the old brownstone. Because her only problem was getting up and down the stairs we decided to honor her wishes and we had a stair chair lift installed in her home.

We contacted several companies that installed stair chair lifts and were somewhat surprised at the prices. Because of the layout of the brownstone the cost was going to be very expensive. My grandmother was on a fixed income and couldn’t pay for the stair chair herself.

In the end the decision was made to pay whatever it took to see that my grandmother remained in the home she loved. She was able to live out the rest of her life in this home and I can still remember the look of happiness on her face when we told her she didn’t have to leave.

Buying the stair chair lift was the best decision we ever made. The money wasn’t important. It was the quality of life and the happiness an old woman received knowing that people cared for her and she was able to remain in a place she loved so dearly. What decision would you make?

Emergency Facilities And Tdds

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Recently, new lines of electronic devices for the hearing impaired have been made available. As the fourth assembly dedicated to hearing impediments, this served as the last session. For the devices they had a lot of variety, from affordable do it yourself installations, to sound activators attached to telephones, to the highly advanced TDD or Telecommunication Device for the Deaf which calls for special installation.

Now, the deaf are able to write messages and hand them out with the telephone and keyboard in the TDD. The device will only be able to do exchanges with another TDD, to make it easier for the homes that use these devices to have emergency aid access, a number of facilities worked on having the devices installed in their offices.

People who are deaf are not capable of hearing any kind of sound, most of them were already deaf when they were born. Hearing impaired individuals are not completely deaf but their hearing is somewhat limited and not as sharp. There are times when the less costly machines become more useful for deaf people including the ones which use telephones or doorbells, the other devices simply made the volume louder on the hearing aids of the hearing impaired.

Motorists can benefit from one of the new devices as it releases signals when you reach the proximity of emergency vehicles. New features most emergency vehicles are being equipped with are transmitters that accommodate signals that are as far as 1800 feet away. After placing a receiver in the car, a light on the dashboard would automatically start flashing as the alert for nearby emergency vehicles. Having this is the car can prevent all drivers from accidents, especially when having the air condition or stereo on becomes a distraction.

Emergency vehicles do not have to pay for transmitters, the manufacturers are hoping that their private customers would be encouraged to get receivers as a result. Another strategy to encourage the prolonged use of their devices led the manufacturers to release $4 rebates per sale. One car maker wanted a certain number of emergency vehicles to have these transmitters, he offered to place receivers in all the cars he made if his desired number with regard to the emergency vehicles is matched. Installing the transmitters for a year was the exclusive right he demanded in exchange for the offer he made.

People were fascinated with the wristwatch looking paging device they demonstrated. The wearer will feel it start to vibrate and this is the alert for the pager triggered by using base stations like phones, doorbells, and call boxes. Lights are installed on the pager, one for every base station, so the wearer knows who needs him.

For those who are hearing impaired some of the devices to improve their hearing included headphones that came with a small box where the volume can be increased or decreased. When one who is hearing impaired needs to increase the volume on his headsets while watching TV, a device can be connected to the set making this possible, only the volume on the headsets is increased.

Much interest for the world of hearing developed in a bookstore owner as he regularly faced customers who were experiencing different hearing problems. When he comes by a product that is meant to help people with hearing problems, he would immediately buy it, later on he would present a couple of them to various groups. Making sure that everyone can understand the item, he writes on a wired up board. To help those who are interested in certain products, he gives them the seller’s information, he does not sell the items himself.

For people who hear well, they may not recognize how serious hearing impairment is. Problems start as early as you wake up, no weather report and no idea whether or not your car is running smoothly in a cold day, waking up to the sound of an alarm clock may not even be a possibility.

Make Your Nose Smaller

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Looking for tips on how to make your nose smaller? Well you’re not the only one, but you have come to the right place. There are quite a few options out there when it comes to decreasing the nose size. It is not guaranteed that every method will work the same as each nose is different, but depending on exactly what you want changed, how fast you seek results and how much you’re willing to pay can all have an affect on choosing the most suitable method.

One secret method to make your nose smaller is the right usage of makeup. I’m sure you’ve heard before that make-up can work wonders and you may even have your own personal experience to attest to that. It’s important that you know how to work with it though and bring out the best features while taking the attention away from others. One could use a slightly darker tone of powder or foundation along the sides of the nose and then maybe a hint lighter on top and at the end of the nose to help decrease it’s large appearance. If your friend is good at putting on makeup and doing other people’s too then have him or her help figure out a nice look for your face.

Another way to achieve a smaller looking nose is plastic surgery. It’s important to note that getting a “nose job” can require spending a large amount of money. In addition, the risk that the after affects bring to your facial features also remain. This isn’t the case with every individual, but it’s just a risk involved. With rhinoplasty comes a few days of rest and healing. You can’t participate in any strenuous activities for a while, but if you have the money, don’t mind going into surgery and don’t mind some uneasiness for about a week this could be the solution for you.

An even better solution for reducing the nose size has become available. A lot of products out there that people are attempt to sell end up costing you dollars while not delivering your desired results. Instead of wasting money and getting your hopes up you might consider the option of getting a Nose Huggie. This little tool is very reliable, affordable and even comfortable. It’s a small device worn on the nose for 15 minutes a day for a couple of weeks. By placing the necessary pressure on the nose cartilage the Nose Huggie helps to safely straighten the nose and reduce its size. It’s a good product but consistency is definitely key to it working well. One can’t wear it sometimes and not others. It should be worn daily for a short 15 minutes.

Nose exercises another safe method to consider. By rubbing the sides of the nose up and down with your fingers this also applies pressure to the cartilage that can be shaped. After much rubbing, if done correctly, the nose can be adjusted. It is just one idea to consider. However, if you’re trying to save some time and money and can afford 15 minutes out of your day to use something that is effective on your nose bridge then your best bet is the Nose Huggie.

Looking to find a way to make your nose smaller, then visit www.nosehuggies.com to find out how a nose huggie can benefit you.

Number Of American Women Pursuing Medical Careers Increase

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

There are more women than ever applying for spots in medical schools all across the country, which is changing the way medicine is taught and practiced. In recent years, the number of female applicants and male applicants that were accepted into medical schools were at an approximate fifty-fifty ratio. Today, however, females are submitting a far greater number of applications. Two major causes are contributing to this fact.

One reason for the sudden increased interest is the changed view in society about what jobs are considered to be “women’s work”. Legal and engineering careers are also seeing spikes in the number of females among the ranks. These changes have increased the pressure on top medical schools to accept more female applicants, giving men some competition. Moreover, even though anti-discrimination legislation has not been evenly or consistently enforced, it has still had an impact on the acceptance of more females into medical programs.

While schools often track dropout information, there are currently no statistics on the number of women who fail to complete medical school. We do have some numbers from several years ago that showed that more women tended to drop out of medical school but usually did so for reasons other than academics. When you talk to women currently practicing in the medical field, they say that the dropout rates between men and women are just about equal, in large part because there are more women and so the pressure women feel can be more easily shared and dealt with. A greater number of women means that women now have the power to end many of the more discriminatory behaviors in the medical field, whether it’s something more subtle or very overt.

As example, there is a story of a lecturer in a medical school telling a joke to his predominantly male class in order to loosen them up. He asked them to decide which word didn’t belong – sex, egg, rug, or woman – then gave the punchline that sex didn’t belong because you can’t beat sex. This doesn’t seem like much, and it is quite tame compared to some of the other things women heard in their days as students, but it isn’t very professional and makes women look like the lesser sex. These jokes could soon be gone for good as well as some of the other overly discriminatory practices commonly found in the medical school setting.

Besides the sexual humor, women in the medical field have to deal with other issues as well. At one large public university, a female student was declined the opportunity to observe a physical exam of a male patient. Why? Because his genitals would be uncovered. It was considered improper or inappropriate for her to see the man’s naked genitalia. While this was going on, her husband was giving a woman a pelvic exam in another classroom. There was also the issue of the admissions interview where a woman was always asked about her career outlook, as well as her outlook on marriage and having a family, while these questions were never asked of men. Although the number of female students is increasing, medical school faculties and admission committees are still packed with men. This definitely isn’t helping. Female students face the common misconception that once women gain their medical license, they will not persist with their medical careers. Even once women begin school, they are often kept out of certain specialties. The most notable? Surgery.

Even though it has been denied that women choosing to have a family is one of the reasons why they are sometimes denied access to medical school, it would be a serious coincidence that is hard to overlook. There have been instances of male interviewers misconstruing a woman’s answers to the family question and turning them into something he said. So if the woman says she plans to have someone take care of her children, the interviewer will feel that her real job is to raise her children. Say she says she’s going to have children and take care of them herself, the interviewer will then tell her she’s not taking medicine seriously.

Again and again it became obvious that the male interviewers perceive women as possessing more sensitivity than their fellow male applicants. But this is chalked up to being another stereotype of women. One second year female medical student has personally witnessed some very unprincipled women and some very caring men, but empathy is still treated as something determined by biology and sociology.

It has been said by some prominent figures that women have traits about them that bring something more to the medical field. It is believed that women in general are raised to be more open and sensitive, and this can bring something refreshing to the world of medicine. Meanwhile the aggressiveness of some men can prove to be a disadvantage for their patients.

As STDs Continue To Rise, So Do The Consequences

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

STDs have been referred to as “hidden epidemics of enormous health and economic consequences” since 1997, when the Institute of Medicine produced it’s summary report on them while meeting in Washington D.C.. As the study indicated, there is a strong reluctance to talk about them openly, just as there is with any type of sexual health topic. As one can imagine, the ramifications of any issue with enormous consequences can only be worsened when so many people refuse to even acknowledge it as an issue. If efforts to quell the rising tide of STD infections have a hope of succeeding, then a many-sided approach will be necessary, starting with a introductory understanding of the many issues in play.

Who do STD infections affect? – One reason why STD prevention is not a popular topic is due to the fact that most people think of it as an personal issue. They firmly believe that only those people engaging in risky behaviors or those already infected have a vested interest. What they don’t realize is that there is also an indirect affect upon us as a community, regardless of whether or not we or someone we know is infected. Long-term medical consequences, complications with pregnancies, and medical care for the uninsured are just a few of the ways that all of us are affected by this epidemic.

What makes this topic “hidden”? – As discussed in the opening paragraph, our society, for many different reasons, continues to resist the need to discuss anything that has to do with sexuality or sexual openness. As a social topic it can be a difficult issue to touch upon, and it may also be that our biological makeup creates a natural inhibition. Another reason that this topic stays hidden, however, is the nature of the many STDs themselves.

It is common for most STD infections that no symptoms or signs are apparent at all. Chlamydia, for example, can be completely free of any signs in half of infected men, and that figure goes up to a staggering seventy-five percent for infected women. HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS, can lie dormant for years depending upon a person’s immune system, and those infected with genital herpes may only have sporadic outbreaks. When an STD does show signs, far too often those symptoms are the same as many common illnesses, such as a flu or common cold. Syphilis has often referred to as “the great imitator” for this very reason. In a society that has become used to performing self diagnosis using the internet, it’s easy to convince ourselves that no action is necessary since no problems are evident.

What can be done to help? – The keys to successfully prevent the spread of STDs are open dialogue and communication. We must be willing to acknowledge this increasing threat to our society, and we must refrain from applying common stereotypes and stigmas to those who are trying to seek information and help. Regular STD testing and HIV testing should become a common part of anyone’s sexual health plan if they are sexually active, and those responsible actions need to be supported by those who may not be active themselves. Instead of frowning upon someone seeking out an STD testing center, we should applaud and support them for helping stem the tide of what surely affects us all. Whether we like it or not, we are all affected by other people’s actions, and in this case, inactions as well.

The Hoyer Lift Is A Very Useful Tool

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

In order to ensure the safety as well as security of the patients seeking medical attention in hospitals or the elderly living in an assisted living facility, there are certain rules imposed regarding how they should be treated and transported while they are within the vicinity of the institution concerned. Medical staff is made aware of the standards to follow even in the seemingly mundane task of transferring the patients from one point to another using the right transport equipment.

The process of transferring a patient from one area to another is very important as such, there are policies that must be strictly adhered to by those who perform such duties in order to prevent any compromise to the patient’s health as well as the reputation of the medical institution. The current state of the patient is always considered, that is, if he is incapable of lifting himself up to get from the bed to the transport device and vice versa and if there are other underlying reasons that would prohibit any extensive movement.

One of the most famous names in patient transport devices is the Hoyer lift which is generically known as the sling lift or hydraulic lift. This equipment has been used for several decades now, and still is considered as one of the most efficient and safest equipment used in hospitals, clinics, and even nursing homes. The Hoyer lift is an assistive device that allows patients to be transferred to chairs or beds with the use of hydraulic power. It is specifically recommended to use for moving patients with very limited mobility and or consciousness.

One of the most important benefits of using the Hoyer lift to facilitate the transfer of a patient is that there will be less people required to be present in assisting him. In cases where the patient to be transported is completely incapacitated, normally, there will be more personnel required to attend to him. By using the life, however, two people will be quite adequate to do the procedure effectively.

Another advantage of using the Hoyer lift is when the patient to be transferred is on the heavy side. This equipment is capable of lifting heavy weights as it uses hydraulic power to do so. It has a steadying effect that might otherwise be quite hard to achieve when human hands are involved and there are different levels of strength applied on the patient which is potentially dangerous and can jeopardize the patient’s safety.

The procedure in using the Hoyer lift follows very simple steps. The first thing to do is secure the patient’s weight by placing a nylon or cotton fabric under him which is then attached to hooks as well as chains that will steadily support the whole body while it is lifted up. The patient will then be lifted using the manually pr electronically operated hydraulic lift and carefully placed on the bed or chair.

There are more articles just like this one about hoyer lift, you can read these at our website about lightweight wheelchairs.
